Jakarta Travel Guide

Jakarta is Indonesia's capital city and one of the largest cities in the world with a population of 8,500,000 people. Jakarta is actually made up of 5 cities that all merge into one Jakarta - Central Jakarta, South Jakarta, West Jakarta, East Jakarta and North Jakarta.

Jakarta is renowned for it's busy traffic, probably some of the busiest roads in the world. In peak times the traffic can come to a stand still and the cars will just slowly crawl along, even on the major expressways.

Jakarta does not have a great deal of tourist attractions though it is the gateway into Indonesia for some of the best holiday destinations like Bali, Sumatra, Manado Sulawesi and the Gili Islands. What Jakarta lacks in tourist attractions it makes up for in huge shopping malls and awesome nightlife. In fact Jakarta has some of the wildest nightclubs and bars in all of Asia.

JAKARTA MRT - Mass Rapid Transport

A much needed MRT (Mass Rapid Transport) underground subway train system is being built in Jakarta. This will really help reduce the crazy traffic in Jakarta but we will have to wait until 2017 when it is opened. The MRT will run from the airport right down through Central Jakarta, directly under the Selamat Datang Monument, out the front of the Grand Hyatt Hotel and Grand Indonesia shopping center.

Already during construction it is making traffic worse in Jakarta but a price that has to be paid to build this important piece of infrastructre for Jakarta. Well done Indonesian Government!
