Malang, located
in East Java, 90km south of
Surabaya, has a
population of around 3.5 million people. Malang is located 450m above sea
level so has a cooler climate. Malang was first established by the Dutch
when it was used for coffee production in the hillsides. Malang is the closest city to the Bromo-Tenggel Semeru National Park. Mount Bromo 2329m high is found in the centre of this park. Malang's town square, Alun-alun was built in 1882. The town square is bordered by the Grand Mosque, markets and the historical residency of local ruler. On Jl. Tugu Circle is the Town Hall, Balai Kota which was the Dutch administrative building. Along the road from Malang to Pasuruan, almost half way, is the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens with a variety of plants suitable for a dry lowland climate. There is some good shopping in the Pasar Baru (New Market) as well as in the flower markets, Pasar Bunga. For an interesting visit go to the bird markets, PasarSenggol. There are also night markets at Pasar Kebalan located near the Eng An Kiong Chinese temple. These markets are open until 9pm. Golf Courses and Resorts in Malang
